Well, recently, I signed up for Pownce. This led me to start thinking about other social networks again. Today I’ll be talking quickly about 4 that I like: Pownce, Twitter, Last.fm, and Facebook (link withheld - if you want it, let me know).
Pownce is kinda like Twitter, except it has extra support for sending people links, files (max 10MB), and events, and the messages can be WAY bigger. I’d say add me on Pownce - I might start distributing WIP versions of my music through it. Pownce was created by Kevin Rose, the same <suckup>ABSOLUTE GENIUS</suckup> that created Digg and Revision3. It’s already fairly large in the tech community, and unfortunately that’s where I see it staying for quite a while. (Want a Pownce invite? Add me on Twitter and ask me there!)
Twitter is quite awesome. It’s mainly for people who have cell phones, and even though I am not part of that particular slice of the population, I still find it quite cool. Basically, Twitter is about these short messages (under 140 characters) called “tweets.” You update them with whatever you’re doing at the moment. It tends to get highly addictive. It’s really only useful though if you have a whole bunch of friends that use it, too.
Last.fm, on the other hand, is pretty much just all about music. Previously named AudioScrobbler, it’s a site that keeps count of what music you listen to and tells you who’s your musical “neighbor” based on what you listen to. This tends to just run in the background, taking track of what music you listen to and adding it to your profile. They also have a customized radio service, where you can put in what artists you like and then listen to stuff from other similar artists. I never really got into the social aspect of Last.fm, but it’s a need-to-have site if you like music at all.
I’ll assume you all know what Facebook is, but here’s a quick recap - it was a social network for colleges up until a few years ago - now anyone can join, but it’s still mainly used by college-goers and high-schoolers. It’s the largest of the bunch, and has quite a bunch of ways to integrate “applications” into it (such as Pownce, Twitter, and Last.fm). Not sure how useful it’ll be, but I’ll try it out.
Now, what effect will these have on my blog? Expect in the next few weeks for this blog to be converted into an aggregator of all my Facebook, Pownce, Twitter, and Last.fm entries. But for now, friend me on all of those sites! ![]()
